Artist Profile

Rosie Hillyard graduated in 2005 with a BA Combined Honours degree in Italian and Fine Art from the University of Exeter. This included a year studying Fine Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.

Rosie mainly paints portraits, bodies, people and portrayals of human life in general, but not exclusively. She nearly always works from photographs. This was initially for practical reasons: to facilitate her painting whatever the subject may be. However, as time passed, her paintings began to explore how the 'ways of seeing' a photograph altered the 'ways of seeing' a painting. Thus, the oeuvre became an analysis on the transformation that takes place when a photograph becomes a painting and when the two mediums become interchangeable. Her ‘photopaintings’ (photo transfers and oil on canvas) illustrate this analysis well.

Rosie has enjoyed painting from a very early age but it was at the age of fourteen, at the beginning of her GCSE course, that she knew this was what she wanted to do. She was awarded both senior and junior art prizes while at secondary school and achieved the highest marks possible for both GCSE and A-level examinations. She then proceeded to have a solo exhibition in August of 2000 at the Mayor's Parlour in Hereford, exhibited at her graduate show in 2004 and has showed her work at various locations in London, in solo exhibitions as well as joint shows.

Rosie has also completed a Masters Degree at the University of Leeds in Art Gallery and Museum Studies and currently lives and works in London.
